Does God “blot” out names from the book of life?

To answer this question requires us to define the term “book of life.” It first appears in Exodus 32, following Israel’s sin with the golden calf—Israel’s seeking another god while Moses tarried on Mount Sinai with God during His transmission of the ten commandments. According to the Scriptures, The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.” The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book—Exodus 32:30-33. It appears that God’s reference to the “book of life” means his accounting of all those who were alive. In other words, Moses was literally asking to die in their place if Israel’s sin was not forgiven by God. This same idea occurs again in Deuteronomy, when Moses is presenting his final words to the nation of Israel just prior to their crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land; he said to them, Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way.” This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. The Lord will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. The Lord will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law—Moses, Deuteronomy 29:18-21. When David is talking about those who have been his enemies, he essentially desires God to curse them, as he says, Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous—David, Psalm 69:27-28.
However, if the “book of life” is being thought of in terms of the book in which all the names of the righteous, meaning all those surrendered to God through Jesus Christ, or having their trust in God being reckoned as righteousness, as did happen to Abraham (Genesis 15:6), then the answer is a resounding, “No!” Once we are genuinely saved, our salvation is secured by God Himself, and cannot be taken away. As Jesus Himself said, when considering some of the saints in the church at Sardis, Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels—Jesus Christ, Revelation 3:4-5. Ultimately, it is the book of life that holds the record of everyone who worships the Lamb of God, and Him only; in fact, according to the book of Revelation, the book of life belongs to the Lamb (Revelation 13:. And if one’s name is not recorded in that particular book, again according to John writing in the book of Revelation, I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and everyone was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire—Revelation 20:12-15.
