(1) There have been 13 popes with the name “Pope Innocent.” They headed the Catholic Church from Pope Innocent I (401-417) (he later was declared a saint) through Pope Innocent XIII (1721-1724). It was actually over 700 years between the reigns of Innocent I and Innocent II. The last 12 bearers of that name ruled at various times between 1130 and 1724. Incidentally, Pope Innocent VIII was in the last year of his reign when Columbus discovered America.
(2) Pope Leo X was the pope at the time that Martin Luther presented his 95 Theses to the Catholic church authorities on October 31, 1517. He did not understand the revolution that Luther’s call to debate religious practices within the Church would begin; he simply had him excommunicated from the Church in 1520. This pope ruled from 1513-1521. Incidentally, like Innocent, there have been 13 popes with the name “Pope Leo” (the first one also being called “The Great”). The last one, Pope Leo XIII, actually ruled into the 20th century (1878-1903).
