The name “Adam” basically means “earth man” or “dust,” although it has also come to mean “human” or “humanity.” It is used over 500 times in the Hebrew Old Testament, but only in Genesis (and in I Chronicles 1:1) is it actually used as a proper name. It actually comes from a root word meaning “red” and suggests that Adam was formed from red clay.
